MadScience

The Foundation is committed to enhancing student learning beyond the classroom by supporting after-school enrichment programs. Through its generosity, the Foundation subsidizes half the cost of the Mad Science program, making hands-on scientific exploration more accessible to students. Each eight-week session immerses students in exciting scientific concepts such as sound waves, energy charges, and basic chemistry, with themed units covering topics like space, chemical reactions, and air pressure. Through interactive experiments and engaging activities, students develop a deeper appreciation for science in a fun and memorable way. By fostering curiosity and a love for discovery, the Foundation helps ensure that St. Cyril’s students continue to explore, learn, and grow beyond the school day.

Mock Trial program

The Foundation has been the principal supporter of the St. Cyril Mock Trial Program for over 15 years. Through the Mock Trial Program, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students learn public speaking, how to think on their feet, how to perform critical analysis, and the basics of substantive and procedural criminal law, and evidence. The program is run by very experienced trial lawyers in both civil and criminal law who teach the students in a workshop setting allowing them opportunities to learn by doing – creating themes and theories of a case, direct and cross-examination of witnesses (played by students) and preparing and delivering opening statements and closing arguments. Over the years, the Mock Trial Program has been one of the most popular after school programs instilling confidence in students as they progress through creating and presenting their arguments and case. The Program culminates in a mock trial competition conducted in courtrooms in the downtown Los Angeles Superior Court and sponsored by Teach Democracy (formerly California Constitutional Rights Foundation). Mock Trial students over the years have gone on to participate in mock trial and debate programs in high school and college – and, in some cases, the students have gone on to law school and to practice at highly reputable law firms on the East and West coasts.
